Is it worth it to invest your time, and money into just any old personal fitness training course? Absolutely not! As a matter of fact, most personal trainer schools offering certifications are not even worth your valuable time, and hard earned money.
If you look on the internet there are even some personal training certifications which charge an incredibly low $49 dollars. What they are doing is selling you a piece of paper stating you are a qualified, certified personal trainer. Please do not fall for weak programs such as these! All you would be really doing is buying a personal training certification, and not receiving any fitness training education to back it up. What this does is hurt you as a fitness trainer, and the client paying big money for your knowledge, and fitness training expertise.
Acquiring one of the best personal training certifications available on the market can lead to a very profitable future. Therefore, it is wise to select one of best personal trainer certification courses available today in order to back your qualifications up with real knowledge, and skill.
Having unqualified personal fitness trainers roaming around the industry calling themselves professionals can be both positive, and negative. The negative is their lack of personal training education, and training can make the industry look rather unprofessional. This, in turn, can devalue fitness trainers as a whole. On the other hand, unqualified personal trainers can be easily out marketed by well trained, properly certified fitness professionals.
How would you go about choosing the best personal training certifications?
The most intelligent move is to only select personal trainer courses, and certifications that are accredited by the National Commission of Certifying Agencies, also known as NCCA. If the personal training certification is not accredited by the NCCA I would personally avoid their offering all together. By holding your certification to a standard set forth by the NCCA you are guaranteed to get value, education, and professional prestige. This will all come back to help your personal training business.
Many ask if it necessary to have more than one personal trainer certification? In my opinion, it is not necessary unless you are specializing in an area such as post rehab, sports specific training, or pre natal fitness training.
By securing one of the best personal training certifications you will exit knowing you are more qualified, and have one of the best personal trainer certifications available today. Your success will surely follow. For the money you invested in the personal training course you will see an excellent return on investment.
Here is a great list of the very best nine personal training certifications for you to choose from. The personal training certifications on this list are the ones that are NCCA accredited, and will actually deliver what they promise. Choose one, study hard, ace the exam, and go onto applying your acquired knowledge to a profitable personal training business.

We are lucky with personal training certifications in Australia because they are controlled by the Government. Doesn't matter where you go to get your Cert 3 or 4 they are all the same curriculum.
Well written.
In the United States, the personal trainer certifications are confusing! Some are concentrated upon strength, some are concentrated upon aerobic, some are concentrated upon swim fitness. One WITS is also college classroom based. I loved your point - some are not worth your time or money - and in fact some are sadly mis-leading. The continuing education is critical too!
Hiring a personal trainer is one of THE best investments one can make.
Good information. I agree with your thoughts. I find that the best certifications are very involved and a personal trainer can't really be "certified" just by taking some test. They need experience. I definitely think it helps to be certified in multiple categories too. Great Hub!
Great hub! I totally agree with you.
A great hub.
It gives good information for those who want to become a personal trainer, but also for those who seeks a great personal trainer.
Though you give a list, I wonder, there is always a number one. Which of the list is absolutely number one?
Because that is what a lot of people would ask I think.
Completely agree about the ACSM and NSCA. My husband's got the NSCA certification and I have the ACSM. Both fabulous, but difficult.

It is so important to receive an accredited training certification. I've been in the health and fitness indusrty for over 30 years and have been titled Mr. USA. I saw that there was a missing link in the indusrty. Why not offer a certification course that certifies trainers through the IFBB. The IFBB Professional League now endorses PROPTA which is an internationally renowned accredited certifying educational institution for professional fitness and bodybuilding trainers. Students of PROPTA have had an unparalleled advantage of studying with elite IFBB Pro League athletes. Personal training is the fastest growing field in the fitness industry today, and highly educated and better skilled certified instructors allow the facilities to maintain premium rates for personal trainer services, as well as high client satisfaction in the quality of training.
PROPTA
I think the gold standard for personal training today is NASM. Their Optimum Performance Training model is in tune to what the fitness professional is likely to encounter in health clubs, since so many people today live sedentary lifestyles and suffer from injuries and structural imbalances.
I am both ACSM and IFPA certified. I also have a MD. I believe these are the two best certifications in the industry. However, they are very different. ACSM was originally designed by Doctors and Exercise Physiologist for those that were planning a career in the health and medical community. In my opinion, ACSM is the best certification for anyone dealing with the “special populations.” Personal trainers do not have the knowledge or skills to work with these individuals without extensive education. ACSM has the best certification in this regard. However, because the ACSM was designed by Doctors it lacks much of the practical experience of the fitness industry, which the IFPA certifications has ample amount of. For example, if you are working in a Doctors Office giving exercise prescriptions to the “special populations “ I recommend taking the ACSM certification. However, I have not found a certification that is as extensive in the practical knowledge of the fitness industry as the IFPAs which is more important for trainers working at a gym or a personal trainer studio type setting. (Even if you have taken the ACSM certification which is unmatched in their area, the practical knowledge of the IFPA certification can complement ACSM very well. Which is what happened in my case. Medicine is my field but fitness is my passion.
Interesting, gives me a bit more motivation in my training.
Very helpful information. Success is the key to life, business, and personal development.
